# Runtime architecture

> See how connectors, context, execution, and durable state fit together.

Formation separates conversation, execution, and operations so a change to one
connector or model does not redefine an agent's identity.

| Area | Responsibility | Read more |
| - | - | - |
| Connectors | Authenticate messages, identify the conversation and audience, render replies. | [Slack](/connectors/slack.md), [Telegram](/connectors/telegram.md), [phone](/connectors/phone.md), and [generic](/connectors/generic.md) |
| Intake and addressing | Capture observations and decide which messages become work. | [Turn pipeline](/runtime/turn-pipeline.md) |
| Context | Select one agent's eligible history, memory, persona, and tools. | [Context resolution](/runtime/context-resolution.md) |
| Execution | Enforce run budgets, record model/tool outcomes, and handle updates. | [Agent harness](/runtime/agent-harness.md) |
| Capabilities | Govern external reads/writes, credentials, and workspace execution. | [Tools](/runtime/tools.md) |
| Recovery | Resume interrupted work without blindly repeating unknown effects. | [Turn checkpoints](/runtime/turn-checkpoints.md) |
| Operations | Provision agents, inspect traces, and manage installation settings. | [Operator API](/operator-api.md) |

PostgreSQL holds the canonical conversation and execution records. Optional
vector backends are derived memory indexes. External model providers, messaging
services, and sandbox backends sit behind their respective adapters.

[Commitments](/runtime/commitments.md), [schedules](/runtime/schedules.md), and
[dreaming](/runtime/dreaming.md) add durable background work with separate eligibility
and budgets. Their existence does not imply a general parallel-agent or DAG
execution engine.

The [perspective boundary](/perspective.md) applies across every component: an
adapter, cache, or background job cannot make another agent's private state
available merely because it shares the deployment.
